  4.     The coverage of the crackdown in China (WORLD, June 26) was of
  5. special interest to me. In 1949 I was part of a U.S. unit working
  6. in Shanghai with the Chinese Nationalists. Following the evacuation
  7. of foreigners from the city, I remained behind as liaison and was
  8. sometimes invited to witness public executions held to intimidate
  9. the population of the city. Once a Chinese aide pointed to one of
  10. three victims waiting to be shot and confided, "That man was
  11. arrested last week as a petty thief. We're using him because we've
  12. run out of Communist prisoners." Forty years later, Nationalist,
  13. Communist, nothing much has changed.
